Very interesting and important video, i would implore all students to watch it and extract the necessary information that will address their particular need.I particularly like when one student said re-read that is very important . The only thing i would suggest for the University of the West Indies is that, given that each discipline write in a unique way after doing FD10A there should be advance writing courses for each discipline for the development of our skills.

This video is inspiring as well as a guideline. For one who doesnt normally do well in writing this video will motivate you. I have always been an avid writer and to “standards” I have done pretty well. It is now promising that a lot more can be done when you write, and that great thing comes from the mind. It is true, to have someone read your work, understand and be totally into it, fascinated even, is such an accomplishment. Should you put your thoughts to paper, everything that comes to mind, be it fact or fiction, can amaze the writer as well as those reading it. I look forward to expressing my ideas.. yes i do.

That really inspired me alot in a sense that it inspired me to realexpress myself in writing. I liked the part where someone said that u might go to a seminar and u heard some powerful words but after a while u will forget it and that is soooooo true. But when u write it down its yours forever n even if u forget u can go back to it anytime and it can rekindle that fire all over again and it really lessen the fear that i had about this course because i have heard alot of scary stories……………

Wow. I was looking forward to FD14A at UWI, just because I was feeling ‘bogged down’ by all the science. But an academic writing course actually looks like it could be something empowering and of obvious practical use. I remember when I first read Nineteen Eighty-Four how frightened I was at the sudden realization that ‘fact’ and ‘truth’ do not necessarily align. What is purported to be factual can be based on shoddy research, or worse, forwarded as such for sinister motives (just as was done in the book by the Party). Still, after that epiphany, I’ve not been robust in my interrogation of the information I consume. I still blindly trust Wikipedia-indeed, 9 out of 10 times it’s my only source on a topic. A rigorous writing course could really set me straight. By learning to evaluate material and further, actually producing something that can be read as ‘fact’ would really help me to ably scrutinize the integrity of the information we all tend to put such faith in. Hopefully, I can learn to summarize, too. That’s always been my weakness, lol.

This video was very enlightening. I could definately relate to the history professor when he spoke to the fact that writing is challenging because one does not have the aid of gesticulation to bring across the meaning you intend to. I was also struck when one student said that she was told by her instructor that if something is completely obvious it is not worth saying. I find that alot of times I would like to look at a topic from a new angle but i am worried about finding sources of information that would enable my piece to be seen as credible.

Very interesting and hopeful for me. This is my first year and I intend to push myself to the limit because I know this will be challenging as I do not like writing. I hope this course will change that.
